Forest Management Plan – Our Appalachian hardwood and softwood forests are managed on a 100-year plus sustained yield basis. Timber harvests are made by selecting first the trees in poor health and second, protecting the best trees for future growth. Special consideration is given to wildlife habitat management, water quality protection and aesthetics.

Draft Horse Logging – Berriedale Farms is committed to
providing gainful employment for heritage breeds of
livestock. With this commitment in mind, Suffolk Punch
draft horses, an ALBC critically threatened heritage breed,
are used for logging.

Custom Value-added Sawing – Berriedale Farms partners with highly skilled custom sawyers who rough cut timbers, posts, beams, planking, siding and molding stock on site and in the woods. By doing this initial wood processing on site, portable band or circular saws reduce transportation costs and diesel fuel usage.

State-of-the-Art Solar Kiln Drying – Berriedale Farms partners with solar dry kiln owners and operators to dry timbers, posts, beams, planking and lumber without burning fossil fuels. Virginia Tech wrote the book on solar-powered kiln drying technology.

Heritage Forest Products – Heritage forest products include: home and cabin logs, timber frame posts and beams, random width plank flooring, quarter- and rift-sawed specialty lumber, board and batten siding, clapboard siding, counter- and bar-top slabs, and fireplace mantle timbers.

Lizzie and Nelson welcome inquiries from land owners whom plan to build upscale homes, stables, barns or pavilions in Highland, Bath, Augusta and Pendleton Counties. And we welcome inquiries from custom home builders, architects and general contractors.

The Berriedale Farms forest, under a progressive and innovative conservation easement overseen by The Nature Conservancy, is a working family forest that produces heritage forest products for income and a profit while at the same time protecting rural America's bucolic country-side and land conservation values.
